Why She’s Top 40: She’s leading a team of strong female volunteers who are making the city a better place
Hannah Barrington’s life is all about connecting others. In her day job as a community ambassador for Care at Home by Exquisicare, she works to help seniors find supportive living services as well ascommunity partnerships. And, in her role as president of the Junior League of Edmonton, she helps train eager female volunteers in the city.
It’s the leadership and training aspect of the Junior League that makes it such a unique organization, according to Barrington. Members can become versed in non-profit administration, how to plan a fundraising event, how to obtain sponsors, and so on. “I heard one woman describe it as her free MBA,” Barrington laughs. “And, it’s true. I’ve received far more than I’ve given.”
Barrington initially joined the Junior League of Edmonton simply because she wanted a more efficient way to volunteer and make the city a better place. She had no idea what an effect it would have on her life. In addition to helping her develop skills, it’s allowed her to become a part of a collaborative, passionate group of women around the world. “We’ve got this group of women who are interested in the city and want to give back, and we just point them in the direction in which they can do the most good,” says Barrington. “And, there are 292 [Junior Leagues] around the world. So you are part of a worldwide women’s movement.”
However, her passion for giving back doesn’t end there – she’s also involved with Ladies on the Green and the Lois Hole Hospital Women’s Society Steering Committee. And, by volunteering as a foster parent, she’s helped advocate for children in difficult situations. “I think you carry the load for the people who can’t, is my personal philosophy,” says Barrington. “Society only works if we pitch in. I don’t want to live in a world where we all just have blinders on and go about our day without that connection and that support.”
