The Class of 2017 Top 40 Under 40 recipients were honoured at a celebration on Monday, October 30 at the Winspear Centre. The 40 recipients gathered with friends, family and colleagues for an inspirational evening to celebrate their achievements and contributions to the community.
The evening started with a cocktail hour, including a special VIP lounge for recipients and their guests. When the formal program started, the evening’s host, Global Edmonton’s Emily Mertz, kicked things off with a song that referenced several of the Top 40 recipients and their achievements. Then, Ward 10 city councillor Michael Walters shared his well wishes for the Class of 2017. In between the announcements of the 40 recipients, Top 40 Under 40 alumni performed. Christine DeWitt and two others from her improv troupe, Rapid Fire Theatre, made everyone laugh (and even got a few Top 40 recipients involved); Mary Pinkoski shared a new, lovely poem about the community; and Sheldon Casavant dazzled the audience with some slight-of-hand magic tricks.
“Edmonton is an amazing place to live, because of the people,” publisher Orville Chubb remarked during the opening remarks. “For the past nine years we’ve been celebrating the Top 40 Under 40 who contribute to making our city such a great place.”
Following the announcement of the Class of 2017, the Top 40s eagerly grabbed the first-released copies of the November issue to find their photos and writeups, posing for photos to commemorate the evening. Mercer’s Catering served delicious snacks while Foundry Entertainment Supply Co. set the mood with lively music.
