Age: 30
Job Title: Clinical Fellow, Alberta Health Services
As a Clinical Fellow in pediatrics hospital medicine at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Zafira Bhaloo not only spends her days caring for children suffering from illness or injury, but also works to bridge hospital and community pediatric medicine.
“Working at the Stollery is a privilege,” she says. “I love to find little niches where I can contribute in more ways, which have mainly been quality improvement research and improving patient safety.”
Bhaloo’s need to lead carries into her volunteer work as well. She spends up to 10 hours a week with the Aga Khan Council of Edmonton, managing a team of volunteers that delivers child development programs to more than 70 Edmonton families in need.
Because of her hard work and determination, Bhaloo has helped many families, but she credits her own family for much of her success — in particular, her mom.
“I came from a single-parent home, and we lived in poverty for a number of years,” says Bhaloo. “Now I can say that [to achieve your dreams], if you have a supportive environment, everything will work itself out.”
