Campio Brewing Co. had a less-than-traditional entrance onto the Edmonton brewery and restaurant scene. Opening just a stone’s throw from Rogers Place only a few months before the global pandemic hit, their early days were unpredictable and all about the now clichéd “pivot.” Facing closures and openings (and closures and openings), the Campio team had to get creative with ways to adapt to this new reality. When the Oilers made the playoffs in 2020, the Campio “Beer Arena” was born. A converted parking lot with a projected screen became a place for Edmontonians to gather and cheer on the team. Fast forward to 2021 and, through word-of-mouth, this parking lot patio gained new fans by hosting diverse events like summer markets with Alexander & Rose and Drag Brunches.
This year, Campio Brewing Co. is really hitting its stride with one of Edmonton’s favourite family and dog friendly patios, back for another season. Voted Best Patio in Edify’s Best Restaurants 2022 issue, this is the place downtown to grab a craft beer with friends in the summer sunshine. It’s already the largest patio of its kind in Edmonton and, with increased capacity allowances this year, Campio is adding more seating, lawn games and will be playing host to a range of fun events again.
Campio has also earned a reputation for its award-winning craft beer, and its food is equally noteworthy. Campio has what is called a “scratch kitchen” – meaning they make as much as possible in-house and utilize local suppliers whenever they can. Their pizza is their pride and joy and almost everything that goes into each delicious rectangle is made in-house.
“Over the last three years, we’ve been able to build an authentic Detroit Deep Dish Pizza programme that we’re incredibly proud of. Every pizza is made fresh to order. Dough is prepared in-house daily, and we make all our own sauces, vegetable and protein preparations, and even use our own blend of cheeses for our incredible cheese crown,” says Hans Pinto, executive chef with Campio Brewing Co. If you haven’t had Detroit Deep Dish Pizza before, it’s a must try. Thick, buttery crust with a crispy cheese edge towering over the pan, layered with more cheese and other toppings, and finished with a drizzle of pizza sauce.
