It hasn’t been open long, but so far Fu’s Repair Shop is an Edmonton restaurant success story. It made a big splash winning our Best New Restaurant award this spring, establishing its growing reputation as one of tastiest places in town. A long line out the door (or a long queue of reservations online) is a sure sign your restaurant’s doing well. But you know you’ve really made it when you have to move to a bigger space to keep up with demand.
That’s what Fu’s has done, taking over what was most recently Station on Jasper. If you remember the old Fu’s, with its kitschy, vignette entranceway (a decorative mirror and static-y TV can be creepy, but in Fu’s it worked) and swarm of red lanterns on the ceiling, you know it’s got vibes to spare (the swarm has grown in the new location). We could write an entire article on its decor — but this will focus on the food.
Crispy Veggie Dumplings! Sorry to yell, but I don’t want to save the best part for the end of this review, and I’ve been thinking about them ever since, so I had to get that out. I’m kind of a dumpling fiend, in that I try any offered to me, and I’ve never not thoroughly enjoyed them. So for these dumplings to stand out so strongly — they come with spiced red vinegar gastrique, and are kind of sweet — says a lot. We recommend making them an automatic appetizer, every time you’re there.
The Peachy Tiger Shrimp is another sweet small eat, but there are plenty of savoury entrees to balance it out. This time, we went with Mr. Chen’s Beef Noodle Bowl, created over three days that involve marinating barbecued braised flank, root veggies and pickled mustard greens, with broad noodles all in a 12-hour Szechuan beef broth. The beef chunks were as tender as any I’ve had, and it was honestly difficult to not over-slurp and keep my broth-food ratio in check.
We returned to the menu’s sweet section with a Honey Matcha Mezcal-rita (with matcha syrup and lime juice) to wash it all down. Fu’s also made our Best Cocktails list, so it was unsurprisingly delicious, which could likely be said about anything on the menu, so don’t be afraid to explore. Just make sure that, no matter what else you do, you order the Crispy Veggie Dumplings.
