Ophthalmologist and Entrepreneur
Age 39
When Dr. Miral Mehta first moved from India to Canada, she was told the re-certification process for her ophthalmology practice would take up to six months. A year later, she was still waiting (it would end up taking three years). Never one to sit still, Mehta already had her sights set on the next challenge.
“I thought to myself, what are some things that will keep me extremely busy? I have to be extremely busy and extremely challenged, or else it doesn’t work,” Mehta laughs. “I thought that technology would be one thing that would be challenging.”
Mehta designed Atom Health, an AI-powered health database. It improves patients’ outcomes by decentralizing health data and giving them and their doctors time-critical data to create more comprehensive summaries of medical histories. Atom also combines holistic medicine and patient-centred healthcare by giving patients, and not institutions, ownership of their data.
That dual passion for health-care and entrepreneurship has also followed Mehta into her private ophthalmology practice at Stellar Integrated Eye Care, which she opened in 2021.
“I’m a physician 24/7, and that’s something that never goes out,” she says. “But my passion lies in entrepreneurship.
“I will always practice ophthalmology, but I will never stop creating something new. As soon as
I find that there is a problem or a challenge to solve, the entrepreneur in me comes out. I enjoy that.”
